Washington Memorial Arch

Discovering Washington Square Park

At the north entrance of Washington Square, in the axis of the Cinquième Avenue, was erected in 1889 a provisional triumphal arch in wood and stucco, intended to celebrate the centenary of the accession of George Washington to the first presidency of the United States. The architect Stanford White was responsible for consecrating this commemoration by the construction of a triumphal arch in marble, built in 1892, and inaugurated on April 30, 1895. Initially, the arch was made of wood and papier mâché then was rebuilt in marble and concrete. The result is superb, especially since a renovation was carried out in the early 2000s. Arriving from the North entrance, if the sky is not too overcast, you will see the tallest tower in New York in the distance. and from the United States, One World Trade Center. And if you turn around, you'll notice the Empire State Building in the distance.
