1) The history of the Borghese Gallery

The Borghese Gallery (or Galerie Bourgeoise) is located on Pincio Hill in Rome (the blue area below). It is one of the seven hills of the city (including the Capitol or the Palatine).

In 1605, Cardinal Scipione Borghese, Pope Borghese's nephew, decided to buy what was originally a private vineyard and began turning it into gardens, to make it the largest in Rome.

Then it will be Flaminio Ponzio who will create these beautiful gardens, according to the Cardinal's plans. Giovanni Vasanzio will resume the work begun by Flaminio Ponzio after his death in 1613. There are many Italian sculptures, fountains and frescoes.

The works lasted about fifteen years, the cardinal also ordered the construction of a villa which he called “Villa Borghese” or “villa of delights”.

It was the sanctuary of the greatest works of art of the Borghese family, highly recognized in Italy (paintings, sculptures, antiques), a way of marking the bourgeois status of the family.

In 1901, the Borghese family, who could no longer afford the maintenance costs of the villa, sold it to the Italian government, which gave it to the city of Rome in 1903 and opened it to the public, much to our happiness.

One side of the building has kept the name of Villa Borghese (in the photo on the left), while the opposite is a museum, and is now called the Borghese Gallery or Galleria Borghese (in the photo on the right).

The building was renovated between 1995 and 1997, and only then were the double staircase and the porch built.

6) How to get to the Borghese gallery

Get to Galeria Borhèse by metro:

If you take the metro to cross the Villa Borghese gardens, you can take the metro line A at the Termini stop.

Getting off at the Spagna stop will take you through the gardens! A subway passes approximately every 5 minutes. There are between 1.5 and 2 km between the metro stop and the Borghese Gallery. Walking a bit will be good, especially if the weather is nice!

You can take line 360 towards Muse, at the Gioberti stop (next to Termini). The best thing to do is get off at the Puccini stop or the next one; Pinciana / Museo Borghese, so you will have to walk a few hundred meters before reaching Villa Borghese.

The Pinciana stop is only 150 m from Puccini, but it makes you retrace your steps to enter the park, you decide.
