A little history
Gantry Plaza State Park is a former harbor that has been completely rehabilitated into a promenade to take full advantage of the magnificent view of New York. All the boats which used to arrive to unload their cargo have completely disappeared. However, you can still admire the metal fittings of the old industrial docks (for information, they are classified as historical monuments).
An urban park that is worth a look
Although small in size, Gantry Plaza State Park is one of New York's finest city parks for getting a breathtaking panoramic view of the skyline. The park is located on the banks of the East River directly overlooking the buildings of the United Nations (UN). The view is not only spectacular, it is also completely unobstructed. You can walk there, go on a romantic outing, sit on the benches and sunbathe to admire the view of Manhattan.
When to go?
- In the morning, the sun rises over the city, the skyscrapers often have a golden reflection. For photographers this is the perfect time.
- In the evening, when the sun goes down, the last rays of yellow-orange sun give you a completely picturesque setting.
- At night the city lights are on, this charming New York City park combines with the skyline to help create a romantic moonlit atmosphere.
Where is Gantry Plaza State Park located?
Address : 4-09 47th Rd, Long Island City, NY 11101
To get to this park, I advise you to take metro line 7 (purple line) and get off at Vernon Boulevard / Jackson Avenue. Walk about two blocks (5min) west, to get your bearings easily just look at the Schwartz factory chimneys and head in that direction.
