It was around the middle of the 19th century that Fifth Avenue became an important place. This was done thanks to Caroline Schermerhorn Astor, a local celebrity, who settled in the area. Likewise, it was during this period that the inauguration of Central Park and the Met Museum, of course bringing their importance to the neighborhood.
Thus, towards the end of the 19th century, several commercial buildings were built and attracted more and more people. This is particularly the case with the bourgeois. Then, one thing leading to another, luxury boutiques established themselves, thus creating a upscale neighborhood and easy from the beginning of the 20th century.
Who says Fifth Avenue says big luxury brands, such as Louis Vuitton, Prada, Cartier, Victoria's Secret or Tiffany's. And all on 4 kilometers ! Yes, 4 kilometers of pure New York shopping! The dream, isn't it?
Besides, my preference is probably the New York store Tiffany's, because of its size, beauty and history. Indeed, the latter opened its doors 76 years ago, and has many marriage proposals to its credit! You will find jewelry of all kinds, refined and magnificent as you wish, not to mention the fact that you can customize some. What to leave with a unique gift and 100% New Yorker.
Also, did you know that the store holds a yellow diamond of 128,54 carats ? This is the Tiffany Diamond, imported from South Africa, which appeared in the famous film Breakfast at Tiffany's, with Audrey Hepburn. One more reason to make a detour, and admire the phenomenon at 82 facets !
You are not very luxury brands, but rather sneakers and sport? No problem, it's at Niketown, at the intersection with 57th Street, that it's happening! In this huge Nike store you will find a lot of products, of course, but the biggest interest are the sneakers. Indeed, you will have the possibility to choose yours and to customize. Colors, materials, inscriptions, it's up to you to play and leave with a pair of unique shoes ! Enough to make great memories for athletes, for only about thirty dollars in addition to the price of the pair of your choice.
Then, advice to lovers of new technologies: go see the Apple Store on 5th Avenue in New York! It is a huge glass cube jumping out of the ground, and it is sure to surprise you. And then, the latter is open 24/24, so you will inevitably find a time to spend there!
Finally, if you are not a big fan of too “mainstream” brands, then do not hesitate to walk around and get lost in the small streets around. There you will find a whole bunch of other diverse and varied shops.
Don't forget to keep an eye out while shopping on Fifth Avenue! You may well discover beautiful things. Indeed, 5th Avenue is very large, and several monuments or attractions are there.
For example, you can admire the famous Flatiron Building, a building in the shape of an iron (hence its name) dating from 1902 and 87 meters high. Continuing a bit, you will discover the very famous Empire State Building. So climb to the top and admire the view from above, in the morning or at sunset. Unforgettable experience guaranteed!
Peckish ? So go to the Shake Shack located in Madison Square Park, a stone's throw away! You will taste the best burgers in town!
Also on Fifth Avenue, you will find the Rockefeller Center, where I recommend you to go also. You will thus discover the top of the building, the Top of the Rock, offering a splendid view of the city and the Empire State Building.
And if you're a literature lover, take a trip to the New York Public Library. No need to buy a ticket to enter, and you can enjoy a quiet moment before resuming your adventures.
Finally, see with your own eyes the wide and 100-meter-high St. Patrick's Cathedral, located across from Rockefeller Center.
Last but not least, you can finally rest after your short walk, once you arrive at Central Park. And the bonus, if the weather is nice, is that you can picnic in the grass and even take a nap! And if you are in New York in the middle of winter, go and enjoy the ice rink in the middle of the park!
So you see that the 5th Avenue in New York full of surprises, and not only when it comes to shopping! So don't hesitate to go for a walk, whatever your interests. That said, don't forget to bring a good pair of shoes, as you may be walking a lot. Or, take a detour to Niketown!
